Budget-friendly wines

Sometimes it’s fun to splurge on the classics but most of the time it just makes sense to sip smart and save a buck. Mind you, these wines come from classic regions in their own right; the bonus is simply that they’re affordable and easy to share - and isn’t that what gathering around the table is all about anyway? This is the type of wine that requires no hesitation to enjoy.

Big thanks to CTV Your Morning for having me on today. WATCH THE CLIP HERE!

1️⃣ NOZECO SPARKLING WINE, FRANCE
This NON ALC gem costs only $10 and is full of flavour! It’s super trendy to go booze free these days and this bottle gives me the same satisfaction as a regular bubbly wine. My philosophy re low/no alc is to incorporate it into your regular routine of enjoying life. Cold turkey is for sandwiches! Try it in cocktails too.

2️⃣ RIVERLORE SAUVIGNON BLANC, NEW ZEALAND
Pricey wine regions that are known for dry, refreshing white wine like Chablis and Sancerre are no longer accessible under $25-30 due to reduced crops from global warming. Dependably, NZ offers many options for around $20 or less, and this one here by Riverlore gives me the freshness and citrusy kick I’m looking for in a crisp white wine. Pair this with paella or sushi!

3️⃣ STONELEIGH PINOT NOIR, NEW ZEALAND
Kiwi wines are so nice, I picked ‘em twice! Fertile regions like NZ seem to be less prone to the drastic weather events we’ve seen in the northern hemisphere, and the cool maritime climate helps sensitive grapes like Pinot Noir retain some lovely elegance, much like what we’d see in the premium Burgundy and Oregon regions. Find it around $20 at liquor stores near you. I’m feeling a prosciutto arugula thin crust pizza vibe on this one.

4️⃣ TRIUS RED, ONTARIO
Look no further than our own backyard for delicious big red wines! This one is under $30 and well worth it for gifts or entertaining. When international Bordeaux blends can clock in well upwards of $30, $40, $50 or more - I like to support local and Trius Red is very well balanced and has a nice smooth mouthfeel. My food suggestion is braised oxtail or earthy, rich dal makhani.
